DAP 610

Cambridge Parallel Processing

DAP 610 is a single instruction, multiple data machine in which each ofthe 4096 processors simultaneously execute the same instruction on datawithin its own memory. In DAP 610, the processors are arranged in a 64 x64 square matrix. Each processor is connected to its four nearestneighbors to provide a high level of connectivity, required in suchapplications as fluid flow or linear algebra. In addition, data pathsconnect all the processors in each column to provide rapid databroadcasting or receiving facilities. Each processor is also connectedto its own local memory, ranging in size from 32 KB per processor, or 16MB, to a maximum of 256 KB per processor, or 128 MB total. The processor array of DAP 610 is controlled by a master control unit(MCU). It has all the features of a conventional central processing unit, but it does not execute all the instruction it interprets from its codememory itself. Parallel instructions are decoded and broadcast to theentire array of processors, which execute them simultaneously, with eachprocessor operating its own data.
